They sometimes get below -10 °C and subfreezing highs.

no.. they dont.. look at climate data for Balmaceda,Esquel,Bariloche,Ushuaia at Wunderground,take a look at years 2007,2010,2013 they have subfreezing highs.Balmaceda is the coldest town in South America(i think in southern hemisphere too).

i get some temperatures data from Wunderground:

Peoples think South america being The amazon forest and very hot,but we get some cold winter too(Sometimes colder than Europe).at same latitude of course.

We have deciduous forest(Small, but we do)and snowy winter in the southern tip of continent.
