Really? Here in Italy almost everyone (me included) is literally crazy for sunbathing and tanning
In Rimini being pale is almost a synonym of being ill or having some problems, because everybody go to the beach in summer as soon as they have some spare time. In our beaches there are some locals who sunbathe in bathing suit from April to October, even early November if there are mild and sunny days, and they are deep brown

And here being pale is synonym to that you refer. But I am pale and I haven 't got any problems hahaha. We go sunbathing at summer only but doctors suggest to avoid sun from 14:00 to 17:00.

1400 until 1700? That's way past the maximum strength of the sun. Here they say that 1100-1500 is when the sun is strongest, though the high is usually around 3-6pm.

Hahaha I always can 't remember when I must not be under the sun. Maybe these hours you refer are the correct and I am confused with the hours that we hit our maximum temperature. But I don 't go out till 20:00 because of the heat.

Dutch people live in a country with kind of gloomy oceanic climate, and they are the tallest ones on Earth. So, looks like their health is rigth.

Japan is the country with the highest life expectancy in the world. Tokyo barely gets more sun than London, and less than the south coast. Switzerland is joint 2nd, 'gloomy'.

It's because health authorities alert us over risks of sun exposure.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. In my local park in the periphery of Bologna I see all kinds of people in bathing suits during warm spring days, I thought it was a more a northern european thing for people in cloudy countries with a protestant culture. I have never seen that in France (especially in the south where people tend to avoid the sun in the summer and the only people out in the middle of the afternoons are brits / dutchs / germans / etc).

I guess the French are more catholically repressedthan the Italians ?

I think a lot of people confuse their want of sunshine for a necessity. I think anyone could "live" with even really low sunshine hours (<1000) but they just don't "want" to. Lack of sunshine isn't that harmful for your health, and it sure as hell won't make you commit suicide like someone earlier in this thread suggested.

I think if people just went out more often during winter this wouldn't be a problem. Exercise creates adrenaline and endorphin which greatly increases your mood. Just bundle up and go outside. I promise you'll be fine.
