Mostly winter, it'll be gone or nearly gone by this summer anyway

So we're getting a negative AO which means cold air leaks from the polar latitudes down below. But it doesn't mean it must reach us rather than somewhere else, right? What's the NAO doing again?

El Niño is still around, amplifying the jet stream. How will it combine with the negative AO?

You just trying to make me smile, aren't you.

Pacific moisture + Polar air =

We need the pieces of the puzzle to start falling in place. We have some pieces finally coming on the table .. Need others now.

A West Based NAO with a Negative AO is very Cold for us

Polar Vortex already elongating by January 6th

By the 12th it's stretched out like a rubber band over North America and Eurasia

The 64,000 dollar question is will it snap in two?

GIDDYUP.

I don't think I've seen a rubber band look like that. Whoa! Yeah, if that thing splits off and one comes down to Ontario or Quebec, I'm afraid to say people will be screaming climate change and thinking of moving south again.

One thing I can guarantee... whenever you are near the Vortex, its downright frigid. Extreme in the Lower 48 case.

And that thing doesn't move around like a surface storm does either.

Is Central Park/NYC still yet to get below freezing? According to weather.com's official observations, the coldest they've been this month is 36 on the night of December 19th

Whoa. Cool. A coastal front formed.

Winds off the Warm ocean vs Winds off Land from the North check out the temp gradient!

20s on 1 side, 40s on the other!

4hrs later the front moved south

And a Freezing Rain advisory is in effect
