Lapse rate looks like 11°C/km for the lower 1 km of the atmosphere. Sharper than adiabatic. Should convect fast. On Sunday the Berkshires had a lapse rate of 13.6°C/km for the first 600 m of the atmosphere. Air was too dry for snow let alone thundersnow. And above 1200 m or so the vertical temperature profile inverted, getting warmer, creating a cap for any convection clouds, stopping them from growing to create much precipitation.
When coastal parts of Spain got snow a couple of weeks ago thundersnow was reported at Murcia & San Javier airport...
