English people are probably among the most social in western society

HAHA! So not true! Try going to Scotland, even Americans are more social.

In my linguistics classes at university we like to call that a sweeping generalisation.

You're English so you can't comment from an outsiders point of view.

Many, many people would agree with me.

You are very wrong. Queue in a shop, sitting on a bus, going to a cafe/bar/restaurant whatever, doing things like that, people will still acknowledge you, perhaps start a conversation or just give you a friendly smile.
These are just every day occurrences. Nothing unusual, just people being friendly.
I have no idea where you're coming from here tbh.

Er? No they don't! Even when I walk down the walkway/hallway in my halls of residence people rarely say hello, maybe the odd time they might smile but that's it.

If you were to speak to people in a shop there they'd think you were a creep! People don't speak to strangers there, it's not like Scotland.

that never happens here to me either, and I am in public from 6:30am to 9:30 pm.

Maybe if you are good looking. Other wise that is certainly NOT the case.

English folks are traditionally more standoffish, less talkative, less open. This is in contrast to eastern & southern Europeans, for example, and even more so to Middle Easterners. The Irish are somewhat shifted away from the Anglos on this matter. A Canadian friend of mine has 2 Irish parents (both born in Ireland) and he says they always find Anglo-Canadians rather reserved compared to the Irish.

Thankfully Americans are not reserved.
