I can speak for that. 20 °F or 30 °F as average highs might be subarctic, it depends on how many months are above 50 °F (10 °C) as daily mean, not on how cold winters are. For example, Homer, Alaska has a subarctic climate.

"Brutal" is a differenc concept, though.

I think average highs in the 30's are not brutal at all. For example, an average high of 37 °F is nice. Average highs in the 20's are a bit different, though. If, for instance, the average high of a place is 22 °F, the average low can easily be 4 °F, and that's not exactly "mild". Keep in mind that, even if the average high is 22 °F, that place can still get highs below 10 °F and lows below -15 °F, and that's not nice, it's extremely cold.

Those places are subarctic because of cool summers, not because of the cold winters. 20s and 30s is pretty standard continental wintertime temperatures.

I even saw someone say that a place with an average high of 25 F in January and 87 F in July as "subarctic rubbish" I mean wtf?

I never said 20s are mild, just not "brutal" as some overdramatic dolts claim it is.

Oh, yes, that was the post in Glendive, Montana's rate the climate thread. I think that post wasn't serious, although we have to admit those winters are actually "brutal". Just check on Wunderground
