I thought you said the 80's weather was never going to come back cause it was so extreme? Think again.
A decade long period like that? Of course It's not likely to happen again.sure some years may get as cold but a decade like that? Not so sure. I was looking at cold outbreaks in the 1930s, one of my favorite weather decades, winters were a lot warmer here, December was the coldest month on average. January 1937 had a low temperature of 34 only. But 1934, Philadelphia and most of the northeast received there coldest Temps ever, Philadelphia went down to -11, Richmond VA went down to -1, as for Raleigh we went only down to 8. Then the most mind boggling cold outbreak is 1936, Richmond went down to -10, Raleigh only went down to 14. What kind of a gradient is that
I read that blog. It is sad. Why don't they throw the whole darn model out and start all over with the largest computer they can build.
It is pathetic that this supposed "superpower" can't even develop a weather model that performs even half decently.
Also, it is embarrassing, but what you expect from a country that doesn't really believe in science much anyway (or at least large parts of the country).
I believe the article stated that the computer isn't even being used to its full capability, it's a shame. Panasonic's model is outperforming the GFS and both use the same data. You'd think the nation with some of the wildest weather would have the best weather models, but nope.

Norfolk and Greenville only got down to 17, but Greensboro got down to 4. Washington DC got down to 3. Charlotte didn't get below 20. I wonder if Richmond's recording was an error.
In other news, we might get our hottest temperature of the year tomorrow.

Nope, -10 is the record low for February there. I would guess they had a snowpack, and the cold outbreak came out of the West.
