Iraq is insanely hot. Basra is worse than Baghdad though.
Last summer in Basra, they had a 53C/38.8C day/night. Insane. Last July had 25 days exceed 47C, the hottest being 53.8C, and 7 days exceed 50C. There wasn't even a low below 30C all month either. 12 days had lows above 90F too.
Yet 3,000,000 people still live there...
it's safer than the north, that's the only reason I can think of...
anyway I chose Baghdad, I have experienced 44C but not -26C. Neither are pleasant for long stretches of time but I picked what I'm familiar with.

These people are so brave.
On top of that, Basra is also really humid with high dewpoints in the summer.
