February 24-26 Storm Update:

So the Euro12z today doesn't show the storm. But Dan says don't fret.. Euro Ensembles do and supports the GFS showing the storm.

"Don't write off the 24th on account of the ECMWF op! Strong signal in EPS for east coast monster, supports GFS. "

Now bracing for freezing rain.

4 maps.

Surface. High Pressure moved over into the Atlantic now

925mb Temps (2500' above). Still below freezing north of Philly and hills of VA and Maryland.

850mb temps and winds. Southerly push at the mid levels pushing up the warmer air. Notice the ice icons. Still at or below freezing in those areas.

Current Surface temps and radar. Can't believe southern MA still in the teens! I'm up to 24 now.

Yea, I thought it'd warm up faster. Rather annoyed. Might make freezing rain more likely overnight. Hopefully any ice will be gone by tomorrow so I won't have to deal with it.

7pm. Heading out there to shovel and measure before it changes. It's close!

Raining with temps in the upper 30s on Long Island. Changed to ice in NYC. 850mb freezing line has moved in

FYI.. I took off the "light rain" metars so the map doesn't look cluttered. That's why not many are shown on Long Island. but it is raining there.

Current temps. Always incredible to see Long Island in the 30s while CT in the teens and 20s. I'm at 26°. Danbury is 19°

Sharp temperature difference from here to Long Island. Not even 100 miles. Snowing nicely out, weird that it'll turn to rain. As you said, it's so powdery.

2" snow total melted to 0.22" liquid. 9:1 ratio. Big time change in the flakes last 30 min as it got warmer above.

I timed it right. Heard the change over and went out there to shovel. It was already getting heavy with the freezing rain. I doubt 2 inches of snow then layer of ice on top would completely melt with rain so figured I just clean it all now.

Had fun doing it. Soaked from sweat and the ice hitting my head. Lol

With 50°F temperatures tomorrow? I think it'll all melt, there'll be 0.5-0.75" of rather warm rain tomorrow, then another day of above freezing temperature. Though if you want it to melt by tomorrow morning, then you'd need to shovel.

When do you think the change to rain will happen for me? From the SPC link, I see -5°C 850 mb temperatures and -6°C 925 mb temperatures.

Probably would of. How long will it be 50° though? Experience has taught me ice doesn't melt fast and ice on top of compacted snow doesn't melt fast even with 40s and no sun. I wanted to anyway. Good workout.

Give it another few hours for you. Probably after midnight.

8:15pm. Bridgeport, New Haven & White plains changed over.

Raining on Long Island. Temps still in the Teens interior CT.

Crazy!

Parts of Long Island in the 40s already. Atlantic City 47! I'm up to 29°. Sounds like rain out there but it's heavy ice. Crap! Here's where I want it to warm up fast!

Hartford and interior CT in the teens still. New Meso discussion in PA now for Ice.
