It's not in a frost hollow. Its large diurnal range is due to its inland location and the extremely well-drained soil.

So you're saying that an area is only a frost hollow if there exists significant elevation change?

There are some hiking trails around Whitefield, NH airport, called the Cherry Pond(s) complex. Some interesting boggy areas with somewhat stunted spruce and fir forests depending on the shifting water levels. They haven't even had a winter this year, way too warm.

Not a true frost hollow, but considered to be the one of the coolest spots in Chicagoland... The suburb of Barrington. Highest minimums are on the lakeshore with the UofC on top.. That's a 10 degree difference in about 25 miles.

I just realized that the Piano Grande in the Appenines, Italy is a big depression. I wonder how cold it got there. The French wiki talks about -32°C in March 2005, but the link to the source is broken. I'm sure it can do better. The only village is on a hill. The old timers were smart enough not to build inside the cold air pool.

Looking at the relief map, the outlet of an hypothetical cold air lake would be a whopping 200 meters above the bottom of the sink!

It's Juras, but anyways, check out this past March at that frost hollow. Pretty incredible lows.

Even down here in Geneva we had regular subfreezing nights; it was great.

A good example, though due to elevation and latitude, it misses actual frost for the most part, is Thermal, CA. In January avg high 73, low 38; and in July avg high 107, avg low 76. Compare this to Palm Springs which is at the other end of the Coachella Valley and a couple hundred feet higher in elevation, Jan 70/43, Jul 109/81.

vouggatjålme (holder of nordic all-time low) is a very pronounced frosthollow. no weather station there anymore, though. also - together with karasjok - the only hardiness zone 2 area in scandinavia that i'm aware of. here are the annual lows 65-95.
