I now understand why this is perplexing to the French as I did some research.
It seems that this insect does not venture that far into the north of France.
So it's very associated with the south of country (pays des cigales and all that jazz).
The distinctive ''song'' of this insect is entrenched in the minds of the French as something that is very typical of the south.
It's really only there that you hear it.
It would be good to see/hear cicada clips that posters have recorded. I've got some good clips, but need to figure out to post it onto here.
Cicadas are a special part of summer. Nothing says summers like cicadas going 24 hours a day and so loud they can be heard over the television or radio. I feel for those who don't have them during summer.

No cicadas here at all in summer... just birds chirping and wind. Your summers are roughly the same as mine. I wonder why no cicadas here?

I agree about the cicadas. They've already started chirping here. They sound like summer.
It could be that cicadas have different distribution patterns or even species in North America.
I've heard them in areas with cooler summers than the areas around Montreal and Toronto.
For example at my grandparents house in Acadia (Northern New Brunswick). Summer maximums only average about 22C there.
Yeah I wonder why none ever made it to the west coast. Even on hot days here around 30C, where you'd expect to hear them you don't at all. I'd think at least for short periods in the summer here, it would be hot enough for them to start chirping.
You know what would be cool? If we could submit the data from our fictional climates and have animations made from them. I know this would be too much work, I'm just day dreaming here.
