Federal and state taxes are a different issue. I can understand George's frustration with sky high property taxes. We have the same problem here in NJ. School taxes are simply out of control, but any effort to cut wasteful spending is squashed because "it's about the kids".
That's true. I suppose I should have specified in my post which one I was referring to.
America seems to have pretty crappy infrastructure - are roads over there maintained by the state or is everything private?
They're generally maintained at the state or county level I believe, but the federal government provides funding for interstate highways. There are toll roads, but those are still maintained by the state. Some road work is probably done through private contractors, I'm not really sure. I think our road infrastructure is pretty good, we're just bad at trains and public transit (outside of a handful of big cities).

I think our road infrastructure is above average but not spectactular. City roads in NYC are very good, but the highways not so much. The guy who built many of the highways was an ******* with absolutely zero sense of regard for people living in poor neighborhoods. It's mostly the public transport that is an abomination, US is probably one of the only countries in the world where missing your bus means having to wait half an hour or an hour

I think a half an hour wait is common in smaller British and French towns

But that's the wait for buses many times even in the bigger cities in the US. NYC is one of the most important and grandiose cities in the world, it should have the public transportation to match it
