As snj90 said it helps your credit card score to use a credit card. And being able to spend more than you have is a useful feature if you're careful. It's not a bad practice to buy a large item you can pay off in a month while still keeping your savings. And a backup in an emergency. Your credit rating takes a hit only if you keep a very large balance or miss payments

Idk how this works, can you improve your score by making tons of little payments (like a bottle water) and then paying them off immediately?

I guess that works if the landlord is a large business? I suppose PayPal could work but I have had trouble setting it up

If it wasn't for the pain in the arse bus i'd literally never use cash.

*Hate the bus because I have to get £10 out of atm each time that I use it. I usually end up spending £6-£7 unintentionally as a result.*

Direct debit works easily at any level.

IDK, I don't pay till the monthly statement comes out. Maybe it doesn't even get reported to the credit agencies otherwise?

But I'll always pay it till it's zero. For example. If my monthly balance is $200, and I make a purchase after the closing date--e.g., $50--my balance will be $250 when I go to pay it, but my statement is for $200. I don't have to pay the $50, but I always do.

It's pretty easy to set up a direct debit or a standing order. You either provide banking details to the landlord, or they provide you with banking details. Everything done automatically online, with no hassle.

I don't even have a check book. I should figure out whether I have to pay a fee to have one. I've been putting off renewing my passport for too long. But when I do, I'll have to ask my mom to write the check for the renewal fee, and I'll give her the cash for it. I usually have virtually no use for checks.

Works fine with private landlords as well. You put your online bank to pay the rent directly to the said account.

I have one running reference number and the rent is paid from my account every 2nd day of the month.
