The French election is fascinating. It's funny that the UK is stereotyped as more racist and conservative than the rest of Europe, yet even with a Presidential system, there's no way that people like Le Pen or Geert Wilders could become serious contenders for power over here.

You can't say that for certain though. If the UK had a different electoral system then there's a good chance none of the current parties would exist in their current form. Everything would be different.

The closest we have is UKIP, and even they are toned down compared to FN & PVV. Even if we adopted proportional representation, they wouldn't be considered contenders for power.

You don't know that though. It's a hypothetical scenario that is unlikely to come to fruition in the near future.

the FN hasn't won — yet. PVV didn't win. England has first past the post which makes it hard for minor parties to win. LePen sounds less extreme than Geert Wilders, but I haven't heard as much of either as you have.

She's still receiving overall polling numbers that a candidate of her kind couldn't dream to get here. The very history of he party would disqualify them as a credible political force regardless of what system we used.

True, but I think it's an interesting hypothetical. I like to ponder pointless stuff such as this.

Oh I do too. There are no definitive answers. All we can do is speculate.
