I see a huge reason..

Using Atlanta's coldest December 1983 temp which was Christmas..

This was the Jet Stream Upper Height pattern that day. Notice how far down the trough digs.

Georgia was getting a flow from the Arctic, follow these winds and the path.

This is this weeks. Doesn't dig down much. Lots of Pacific influence as well because it's more flat in the southern states.. Follow the winds.

540 line only down to Virginia this time VS in South Carolina in 1983.. The cold traveled further because the Jet dipped south more.

Yeah I can't imagine that it would get THAT cold this Thursday (what the EURO is showing), but still it will be cold. I'm thinking Thursday morning lows will be around -3F near the lake, to -12F in the coldest western suburbs. ORD -8F, MDW -6F

Way too early, but already indications of another snow event this coming weekend

Patterns can change fast and with a screaming Pacific flow you have to be careful forecasting cold. All it takes is a little retreat of the northern branch and it's above normal all over the U.S. Where is the Greenland block or the buckles?!

Like Christmas week..

But first..... another winter storm coming end of this week .........

Anyone see whats happened in Grand Forks, ND?

Pink dots = Normal Max
Blue dots = Normal Min
Red Bar = Actual Max
Blue Bar = Actual Min

Grand Forks, ND max temps have been pretty much near where the normal low is, the 10th was even below that. Yikes. Struggling past single digits again today.

Actually, they haven't been past single digits since the 8th.

Nice and mild today after 3 straight days below freezing. Woke up to a nice 4-6" of snow on the ground--so pretty.

39/29 today. The low is the same as yesterday's high.

Currently 37 with a 27 dew.

Getting really cold this weekend--highs in the teens, lows in the single digits.

Could be our first below average month since April and first below average December since 2013.

I wonder if much of the southeast will wind up with their sixth consecutive warmer than normal December. With the Christmas time torch it looks possible. Already the five year period from 2011-15 was the warmest five year December average for the Raleigh area. For the southern part of the country, this December seems a lot different from 1983. I don't see Jacksonville, FL having a high of 30 this month, or Raleigh having a high in the 10s and a low of 4, with Lynchburg going subzero.

I haven't followed the exact numbers but the consistency of the air is interesting.

Here in Aurora, ME, 25F Degrees, Dew Point 22F Degrees, Winds North 9 MPH, clear with a lovely moon lighting all...a reason to sigh!
After an hour and a half commute (which it normally takes 55 minutes), in snow from work to Aurora, through four inches of snow, we were thankful to get home...saw a pick-up truck broad-side a power pole (going too fast), and take out everyone's electricity in East Eddington! Thankfully they were not hurt...Also, saw a Trucker pass the four of us in a no passing zone...Flipping crazy out there!
We ended up getting about 6" of pristine snow which I believe we will have no problem keeping throughout this week!
