My Favorite Climate: [strictly theoretical]

4 distinct seasons: Winter from Nov 15th to March 5th; Spring from March 6th to June 10th; Summer from June 11th to Sept 10th; Fall from Sept 11 to Nov 14th. Onset of spring and onset of fall are notoriously abrupt. Snows thaw rapidly with riverine flooding last few days of Feb to first week of March.

55 Thunderstorm days per year; from early March to October 15th, always occurring in late afternoon or early evening; 4 or more severe storms/year with wind gusts over 60 mph and/or nickel sized hail. 3 - 5 tornadoes within 50 miles of the place per year on average; an F4 or F5 (or 2 or three) same area, every 10 years on average. A mesoscale convective complex rips through the area every 4 - 6 years, always arriving during the day.

75" of snow per winter with at least 3 storms 8" or more. Lake effect snows common. No ice storms, please. Snow covers the ground continuously from Nov 30th to Mar 1 or so. Winter storms clear out fast with no prolonged cloudiness (some clouds allowable for lake effect snows).

Avg first frost Sept 27th; first freeze Oct 10th, first flurries Oct 10th - 18th. Dec- Jan mean high/low are 26/14. Last frost Apr. 5th.

Mean high / low for March 15th is 52/34; Apr 15th 63/42; May 15th 73/52. Avg High / Low for July 84/64. 3 humid days per week; 3 dry days per week. Dreamy textbook warm fronts with heavy thundery rain, ending with fog are desireable on occasion, late April to late June.

I like continental climates with somewhat dry winters and summers, but somewhat wet transition seasons. Snow should be occasional and should never occur from April through October. Frost should never occur from May through September. Occasional summer thunderstorms are nice. There should be ample sunshine through the year.

Ideal winter month: High of 2 and low of -8 Celsius.

Ideal summer month: High of 29 and low of 17 Celsius.

Somewhere in the U.S Midwest, or parts of Nebraska, Utah and Colorado, and parts of southwestern Russia, fit my bill.

I prefer the cooler side of Köppen Cfa. Hot summers with 20C+ dew points regularly, and moderately cold winters that are variable. A lot of thunderstorms, especially in spring and summer, with many of them featuring cloud-to-ground lightning bolts. Ample rainfall, with a mix of wet and dryish months to keep it interesting, as long as there is not significant flooding or drought. Enough snowfall to coat the landscape a few times per year, but rarely a large amount that leaves you stranded. 55-60% sunshine is good.

Likes:

Cold winters (average highs close to 30 F / -1 C, average lows around 14 F / -10 C)
Snow in the winter, about 50 inches (confined to November, December, January, February, and March, with October or April snow rare)
Possibly a snowpack during the coldest 2-3 months of the year, at least 50% odds of snow covered ground between December 15 and end of February
Mild springs (average highs should be over 60 F / 16 C by April 21)
Hot summers (average highs of 88-93 F / 31-34 C are ideal in the hottest month; 84 F / 29 C at a bare minimum, lows around 70 F / 21 C ideal)
Plenty of thunderstorms (50 or more per year ideal)
40"-60" of precip per year on 120-160 days - no dry season
Lots of variation
Sunshine of around 50%
A couple big snowstorms a year (7"+)

Dislikes:
ABSOLUTELY no snow (even one show of flurries 50 years ago is FAR superior to nevvvvversnow)
Nevvvvvver having hit both 0 F / -18 C and 100 F / 38 C
Little seasonality
Any desert
Mild/warm winters
Cool summers
Lows below 50 F / 10 C more than 5 times in a typical summer (June 1 - August 31)
Snow in the warmer half of the year
Cold springs / severe seasonal lag (coldest 3 month period should roughly be Dec 1 - Feb 28 (plus/minus a week), warmest 3 months should be roughly June 1 - August 31 (plus/minus a week)

I think we should find a house together. I also prefer the transition seasons to be the rainiest. I have been looking at Omaha, Nebraska, and it is near perfect for me.

Wildcat, seems you already live in the right place

Yeah, I like it here, although I'm envious of Louisville's climate.

Wow. A lot of posters of my ilk.

But I do like a rare summer night with a record low of 50 in July, and I'll tolerate 100 degree days (no more than 2) on 1 in 5 summers. I will even tolerate a wet snow of 3 or 4" in late March, or a nite of frost preceded by evening showers to sleet in early April, but a rapid warm up afterwards. All just for a little variety.

Got to have tornadoes. I especially like super outbreaks involving my area, or those isolated, sometimes F3 ones that occur, unexpectedly ahead of a stalled warm front in early May. Mmmm. Chesterfield Township was a classic. Seemingly came out of nowhere.
