I got 280. This makes no since that Phoenix has more misery than Houston or New Orleans or Dallas. It's warmer, drier and sunnier. Needs to take into account actual average temps, record temps, rainfall and sunshine.

Yep, Phoenix has far superior winters to either of those cities. This is a very simplistic, flawed and random system. It needs to eliminate the latitude factor as it's just a random variable with no realistic effect, and incorporate the average and record temps, and sunshine.

Somehow, my winters are more "miserable" than Dallas which has cooler winters and is more prone to snow and cold outbreaks with record lows much colder than anything possible here. Also, how are Phoenix's winters more miserable than Dallas'?

This system is flawed. It does not even consider sunshine hours or record high/low temps.
yes, and precipitation/cloud cover type. even some heat lovers prefer just below freezing with snow than just above freezing with cold rain (I bet you're one of them?)

perhaps depok's only "winter" misery is "morning darkness" during the period when civil dawn is later than 5:30

I don't understand why you like super-early sunrises so much . For me I think the ideal sunrise if I were living in a equatorial climate would be around 6:50 A.M (so sunset would be around 6:50 P.M). The 7:30 A.M sunrises we're having here right now are a bit late but they're still preferable over a pre-5:45 A.M sunrise.

Life is what you make it. Move, or find a way to keep the weather from making you "Miserable".
"Ohhh, it's cold and dark.... I'm SAD."
Get over it. SAD is so uniquely American.

Depending on your work hours, I like an early sunrise myself. Makes it easier to get going in the morning, hormones (seratonin) and all. I find I can be more awake during daylight on 5 hrs sleep, than I will at say 2am after 8-9hrs sleep

SAD is found in Scandinavia too, it's a fact. But a similar fact is that we do something about it instead of just moaning.

Not winter misery:

Winter misery:

some 16- and 17- year olds are driving to school before civil dawn (5:30-5:45) in certain months.of the year though, not only by cars, but by motorcycles as well (majority in rural areas, actually!)

for tomorrow morning the sunrise will be 05:26 am, sunset 17:46 pm. just about right/decent. for surabaya (east java capital) is even earlier at 05:03-17:22. thats earlier than boston's (41 north) earliest sunrise, at 7 degrees south!

The only thing that qualifies as winter misery for me is the lack of snow. Give me feet vs inches and months vs days. I like the darkness and prefer night to day. I'm at my peak at around 1am. John says I was a vampire in a previous life. Sunshine before noon? NOOOOOO.
