I get around 480 using the formula in the OP. No misery personally though, it's my favorite time of year.

I don't like the cold (at least below 30), even though I am used to having grown up in Minnesota and then living in Illinois. But, the cold itself rarely makes me miserable. But, the darkness drives me nuts.

I tried to calculate (using grega94's system) for my location and it came out to 81.91, which can't be right. Can someone calculate it for me?

So I decided to make some more calculations for Russia and Canada since they are considered to have some of the harshest winters in the world.

Russia

Moscow: 20.93 + 4.10 = 25.03
St. Petersburg: 23.00 + 2.93 = 25.93
Yekaterinburg: 11.17 + 5.93 = 17.1
Nizhny Novgorod: 17.00 + 4.90 = 21.9
Samara: 15.37 + 7.07 = 22.44
Omsk: 4.97 + 8.47 = 13.44
Kazan: 14.53 + 5.7 = 20.23
Rostov-on-Don: 27.37 + 6.21 = 33.58
Irkutsk: 3.53 + 10.13 = 13.66
Vladivostok: 14.13 + 17.27 = 31.4
Sochi: 44.13 + 9.57 = 53.7

Canada

Toronto: 27.9 + 9.18 = 37.08
Montreal: 18.97 + 9.98 = 28.95
Calgary: 20.43 + 12.60 = 33.03
Ottawa: 17.77 + 10.44 = 28.21
Edmonton: 15.93 + 10.23 = 26.16
Winnipeg: 6.30 + 11.60 = 17.90
Vancouver: 39.57 + 6.92 = 46.49
Quebec City: 12.80 + 10.07 = 22.87
Hailfax: 26.90 + 11.40 = 38.30
Saskatoon: 9.40 + 10.79 = 20.19
Victoria: 41.87 + 7.88 = 49.75

Platte Purchase.

Use the climate box for Kansas City MCI Airport or St. Joseph. I'm about halfway between those two.
