Ok what the hell is this. The latest weather observations page said the low for today was 18.0°C, but on the summary for the month it says 14.8°C. This has happened many times and clear nights of well over 20°C have ended up as 19.6°C or something as a result. What does this mean and why does it happen? Are they purposefully fabricating results?

Latest Weather Observations for the Melbourne Area

Looking at the half hourly summaries, there's no way it could have gotten to 14.8°C:

Latest Capital City Observations Melbourne Airport

And monthly summary, look at the 20th:

Melbourne Airport, Vic - Daily Weather Observations

what the f*ck?

Notes to accompany Daily Weather Observations
Quote:
Minimum temperature in the 24 hours to 9am.
Sometimes only known to the nearest whole degree.
It was 14.9°C at 9:00am on the 19th. The 14.8°C minimum for the 20th reflects this. Strange but true.

Also, you should know this too:

The corollary of this is that the minimum and maximum temperatures could be separated in time by as much as 48 hours and that neither one need occur on the calendar day of note. For example, the minimum for the "20th" could occur on the 19th whilst the maximum for the "20th" could occur on the 21st. Even stranger but equally true.

That's ridiculous. How does the weather at 9am on the 19th affect what I felt overnight on the 20th? And same goes for the maximum, although it's a bit more understandable before a cold front.

You mins were killed by the 9am reset. The BOM's minimum temps are actually the 24hrs to 9am. It has killed many a high overnight min. In my own records I make a note in the spreadsheet of the overnight min aswell if it differs from the 9am min. BOM sadly doesn't do this.

Turned muggy here today, dewpoints were up to 20C with heavy low-lying tropical cloud and rain here and there. Went to get KFC tonight and got her in literally seconds before all hell broke loose. We had 11mm of rain between late Jan and today, today so far over 17mm. Loxton received 39mm.

Adelaide had a 23.0C low on the 19th, highest April low in 10 years. It appears as 22.6C in the BOM data because that was the temp at 9:00am the previous morning. The couple days beforehand, my lows were about 10C cooler than Adelaides!

Because that was the lowest temperature in the 24 hours to 9am of the 20th. It's got nothing to do with whatever the temperature was overnight.
