I think that a warm April, the first warm April in more than half a decade for many parts of the Northeast, might make the people here believe again
March 2016 was top 10 warmest in many places. April 2014 and 2015 were above average in Rochester. May 2015 was record warm and May 2015 was above average and had 90s at the end.

Sure there was a march blizzard this year but March 2016 barely had any snow here. May 2015 was record warm and had nothing near freezing rain and the one day in May 2016 with snow was followed sook after by 80s and 90s and was an otherwise above average month.

March 2014, 2015 and April 2016 were below average but you can't ignore the above average spring months and you certainly can't say there's a cold trend when half the spring months are above average.

Also, like 80% of the last two years up there has been above normal, wayyyyy above in some cases. I think "losing faith" is way over dramatic.
Even New York City had freezing rain last year. I was in the city on like the 11-14 of May, and it was hovering around 10C with bone chilling wind and rain, and NYC is typically one of the warmest places in the Northeast. I remember South Jersey got it particularly bad and was actually colder than North Jersey many times that month

In Binghamton every April since 2011 has been below average. This April is very nice, but it's the warmest April for the Northeast since 2010. 2014 and 2015 were both top-5 coldest Marches on record. This March was the snowiest on record by a mile. And even tho last May was above average in the Northeast, it was a very nasty month with three weeks of cold, bone chilling weather, before we suddenly turned into Dubai the last week

It "feels" like winter's been sticking around longer than usual, and it's largely due to 2014 & 2015 for me. I never used to expect a late season arctic outbreak and/or blizzard, but now I sort of do, because such weather keeps occurring, even if the months themselves manage to be warmer than normal in the end. Cold outbreaks and snowstorms can leave a lasting impression.

Maybe because it really is cold? Barring any record breaking warmth like December 2015 or February 2017, NYC is an icebox from December until mid-March. People living in warmer climates will never understand the pain that every New Yorker feels in the winter, especially towards the end of February and March

When was there freezing rain? If it happened when it was 50°F in May then I don't know what to say...

There's been a pretty sizable uptick in snowfall totals here, and that includes March. Even if temps are slightly above normal, a snowstorm (or two, or three) can leave a lasting impression.
Yup, my view of the climate here was forever changed by 2014 and 2015. The last time that New York had back-to-back winters that cold (2003 and 2004, and before that, the late 70s) I was not yet in the country, so I had no idea that New York can get that cold. The extreme bitter cold lasting into March and April both years was even more scarring than the winters themselves

Same for me. As a person that hates winter already, February/March of 2015 was the straw that broke the camel's back. I realize they were quite anomalous, but I can't help but to look at this climate a little differently.

Most of the time it isn't even the severity of the cold, it's the fact that it seems to drag on forever when you're ready for spring warmth.

I didn't mean it literally lol, it's just an exaggeration. 50F with high humidity and rain indeed feels freezing, cold enough to hide your hands in your coat pockets the whole time
