Wow UHI. Low in Plum this morning was 31° and apparently NWS Pittsburgh didn't go below 40°. We still have heavier snowpack, so that could exacerbate the situation.
Winter Storm Watch posted for me. No specifics yet, just 6"+ of snow is possible.
Current temps at 5000'. Couple things to point out..
1. I see why Russia just had crazy snowstorm.
2. Polar Vortex continues the split theme this winter.
3. The one over Canada is leaving (not dropping south) but...
4. A trough is pushing down in to the U.S and the cold air will follow..
5. Trough is in Central U.S right now
6. You can see why California is getting beneficial rains.. Setup supports it.
7. The Gulf moisture is riding up the flow in the East. Warm, muggy, and rainy coming now
8. As that Jet stream/front moves east areas will change from Rain to Snow and with enough gulf flow as the cold air filters in behind it, and a new storm developing, some areas could get a decent snowstorm!
Winter Storm Watches posted.. I see a blizzard warning in ND. We might see more Fog Advisories going up in 2 days where there is a snowpack in Northeast
watch all that gulf and atlantic moisture get fed into the front.. rain changes to sleet then snow on backside.
Those areas will experience rapid falling temps and an interesting moisture transition. Seeing and feeling the change from rain to snow is cool I admit.
40s and 50s in Eastern Iowa and 0s and 10s in Western! Crazy.
often when it's warm out in the winter, you can see a cold pool in the Plains moving east at us. Zonal flow, ftw. Eastern ridges never last long, IME. We got plenty of warm days in 2016, but I think that was more of a zonal flow.
Mt. Washington this morning. Typical pattern with warm air moving in and radiational cooling overnight: low lapse rates, with the summit and valley bottom roughly the same temperatures. Much windier at the summit of course; it sometimes gets calm at the summit but that's not happening with this active weather pattern. The summit rose from a dewpoint a bit below 0°F at 6 pm yesterday to 23°F at midnight and then rose in sync with temperature as the air was saturated. A cloud must have moved in at the same time.
Snow already looking a bit slushy; powdery look is gone and compacted a lot. A bit of fog this morning as the warm, moist airmass gets cooled by the surface. Forecast summary
High pressure will continue to move further away from the region
today and tonight resulting in milder temperatures along with
the potential for some dense fog. Very mild weather is
anticipated on Friday along with an increasing risk for heavy
rain, gusty winds and flooding later Friday into early Saturday.
