Its not unusual, its going to be a couple of degrees below 0C at night and a couple of degrees above 0C during the day, for February is that really that surprising? Its hardly 63 all over again, I am just suggesting that terms like 'Beast from the East' are a bit 'over the top'! Some of my work colleagues (I work in an industry with a very international work force) are starting to panic! By the end of next week it warms again, yes a cold snap, yes colder than usual, yes the coldest temperatures of the year but really nothing unusual, certainly not here anyway.

Amazing how those Alps protect Nice from east winds. That makes all the difference.

Not 1963, but current output looks almost identical to 1987. The Met Office show daytime temperatures of freezing for my location next week. That isn't normal, not for any time of year let alone approaching meteorological spring. It's been 3 years since we last had a maximum temperature below freezing.

As I have said countless times, [mod cut]. The UK was bound to get another severe cold spell again and next week could well be it.

Erm yes it is unusual. Where exactly is going to be "a couple of degrees below 0C"? You do realise the UK is a big place & some places will get considerably colder than this?

And no one is saying it is going to be like 1963, so I suggest you stop reading the 'Daily Express' & actually educate yourself on how to read the weather models, which ARE predicting a significant cold snap, which potentially could be the coldest in many areas for several years...

Responding to Dunno's post about those cold upper layer temps, and pray tell what does that relate to at the surface in such an ocean surrounded island?

Depends. GFS shows widespread maximums of between 0C and -3C next week. My location would be looking at 4 consecutive days of with maximums below freezing. It also shows lows down to -10C in some places (I imagine it getting colder with snow on the ground).

But if this was occurring in January or early February then it would probably be even colder. The kind of 850 temps showing are the coldest we've seen in probably 20+ years.

Eastern Europe and Russia get their fair share of very cold temps in the winter.

George by now you should know I like temps close to avg. I hated that 80f. It will fu... with the trees, animals and insects. 2012 caused a bee wipe out around here as they came out in Jan in force and starved to death as we don't have enough nectar in January obviously.
