I constantly look at the weather data for Moscow and just puzzled as to why it is always so calm. 0, 1 or 2 mph wind readings. Just amazing.

Perhaps because it's inland?

Windy areas to be more on the coast or near a sea.

Region Banat in northern Serbia is far away from the sea and it's very windy region (especially southern part) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banat

City Vršac in southern Banat is the windiest city in Serbia and in former Yugoslav countries https.://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vršac
Vršac is located about 400 km from Adriatic sea and about 600 km from Black sea (airline).

Most inland areas, large landmasses of the world are among the least windiest, unless there is an orographic factor coming into play.

Hmm. Great Plains are an exception then. Interesting the Upper Midwest isn't that windy while the nearby plains are. Moscow looks like it's in the green color

Strange too how the plains in the USA are much windier than those in Canada (more weather stations?)

Why is the horn of Africa so windy? I thought it would be in the doldrums.

It must be the height of the Rockies that determines windiness in the North American plains. The mountains are relatively insignificant at higher latitudes compared to say, New Mexico to central Alberta. The map shows this relationship.

As for eastern Africa (mostly Somalia)...

Greenland looks like a very pleasant place too.

there are mountains as tall or taller than the Rockies at similar latitudes (Alps, Central Asia) but they're oriented east-west rather almost exactly north-south

Ethopia is mostly a high pleateau, maybe the winds are the contrast between it and the coast? The Northeast US looks windy but outside the coast, it's only elevated areas that are windy. At the 5000 foot level, the Northeast US is windier than further inland. I downloaded a map, I could fish it out.

Lol how many times have we heard B87 claim that England was less windy than NYC or the East Coast of US. Looks like what I always suspected, they are way windier than we are lol on average.
