Winter Storm Watch
URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
336 PM EDT Mon Mar 19 2018
...A dangerous storm threatens heavy accumulations of wind driven sleet
and snow which may cause widespread power outages and make travel very
difficult at times...
.A pair of back to back noreaster`s Tuesday and Wednesday mornings
will merge into a single intense storm off the mid Atlantic coast
by Wednesday afternoon and then head for Nantucket Island early
Thursday. Travel plans will be substantially altered by Wednesday.
Consideration should be given to no unnecessary travel Wednesday
afternoon and evening when the heaviest snow with 1 to 3 inch per
hour accumulation rates should occur.
...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH
WEDNESDAY EVENING...
* WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation possible....mainly as snow
though some sleet and light freezing rain is possible Tuesday
night. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches, with
localized amounts up to 12 inches, and ice accumulations of up
to one tenth of an inch are possible.
* WHERE...Portions of northern and northwest New Jersey and east
central, northeast and southeast Pennsylvania.
* WHEN...From Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on difficult travel conditions,
including during the evening commute on Wednesday. Significant
reductions in visibility are possible. Roads in the hilly areas
may become impassable if 1 to 3 inch per hour snowfall rates
develop as expected Wednesday afternoon. Power outages are
possible. Northeast to north winds should gust 20 to 30 mph at
times.
The cold air is what has been lacking this winter in Maryland. We have gotten some significant precip. events, but it just hasn't been cold enough to sustain hours of steady snow fall. Nor'easters 1-3 barely touched us, initial low went north or south, secondary low brought only wind and squalls.
Not an expert, but in my memory this is the set-up for our big storms: The initial low pressure comes right over us, then the secondary low hugs the coast pretty close so the stronger snow bands make it far enough inland to hit us.
Yup. Classic setup. Good luck with this one. Keep us posted!
I'll start posting these loops more starting tomorrow afternoon..
Looking at the last 4hrs we're all probably saying the same thing... Where's the Cold??! I mean its raining even in Indiana right now. No now anywhere in the East. Big time storms in Alabama.
Don't worry, the cold air will start crashing in tomorrow and by time Wednesday comes around it's cold enough for snow north of Richmond
As Bernie rayno would say, it's thinking in Western PA Well, just starting lol. NWS is still only saying 3 to 5, everyone else is 8 to 12. If I get 8.5" I'll have 70" for the year, which would be awesome
I just wanna wash my car once without worrying about salt or wet roads.

Kinda funny looking at this in March. You wanna say "Where's the cold air?!"
It's above freezing at 5k over Southern NJ and so its raining there.
It's above freezing at 5k throughout Ohio and Western PA so it's not like there's a ton of arctic air around rushing in.
Plus it's March.
Plus coastal storm pushing Ocean air in.
Sun angle higher in the sky.
It's -5°C over NYC and the cold is stubborn to leave north of Philly. Interesting setup when you look at it.
