I'm surprised even at 3500' it's in the 100s! Is that a record or near it for Amarillo? I don't follow West or South stuff much.
High Plains and the west at elevation is capable of 100s but much above 100°F is rare. Record for Amarillo is 111°F in June, 108°F in July, so near a record.
Including this. I like they said May, rather than winter but either way, it definitely looks "out of season".
Here's the surface loop next 5 days.
Watch that storm spin and spin over the Midwest while a coastal storm develops. SC gets hit with both system looks like.
NAM model not showing much precip for many areas but its the setup that's interesting. Also some areas will get some intense downpours and probably Thunderstorms. Humidity will be around for a long stretch
If you play the Upper level loop you'll see the Huge Upper Low over Midwest which captures the coastal storm so to speak as they try to merge together.
My comment? Save it for fall and winter! lol
thanks for the animation, if only it didn't stick. Hopefully the following weekend will be ok

Amarillo sees 100's every summer but the nights usually cool down a bit. It's rare to be above 70 at night due to the higher elevation. The higher elevation means that radiational cooling usually works well. But this is an extraordinary heatwave.
It got into the mid-100s in the OKC metro area today. I went outside when it was 103-104, and it was uncomfortably hot, but it honestly felt better than some days in the mid 90s with high humidity. Today's highs and maximum heat indexes across Oklahoma:

I can't breath looking at that. And he points out something...
Isn't that awful close to the location that has the record low for Oklahoma, -31F?
Oklahoma is a state with 4 extreme seasons. Summer is as hot as Texas, winter is as cold as the Dakotas, spring has violent thunderstorms and tornadoes and fall is as lovely as the Northeast in fall.
Here's where the 120 degrees was in relation to the -31. How many places do you know that get down to -31 in the winter and have a heat index of 120 in the summer? You have to be very hardy to live there:
