Here are the temps for the month NYC last hit 100°F.

Were there crazy storms that day? Look at the next 3 days! Well below normal. Whoa! Only 70s for max? 72???
Talk about a pattern change. Only 1 90 after that 100 that month.

(Pink dots are the normal daily max temps, blue are the normal minimum temps)

Here are photos of Central Park’s weather station from 2013:

Keep in mind, there isn’t supposed to be vegetation (aside from grass) within 100 feet (30 meters) of the sensors, impossible task in Central Park, but this is simply ridiculous. The sensors are almost in complete shade, these are designed to operate in full sun.

Are the readings always 100% wrong? No. But they’re unreliable, how would you know when it’s wrong or right? It’s not uncommon for this station to be the coolest in the entire metro area and it’s in the middle of Manhattan.

The radiation protection shield on them does shield it from the sun but those shields aren't always effective and they are there for that reason...TO PROTECT from the sun. Shade is a more accurate representation of air temp then those shields.

Also...that's why most stations have ventilation fans on them. Solar radiation can heat up the sensors too much! I cant tell if they have it there. But when those leaves fall off there is direct sun there anyway.

Shade is always best to place sensors, we're measuring Air Temp, not Solar Heating temps..

Question... Do you disagree with the stations near 150°F Runways where wind from planes circulates heated air around?

Here is Hartford's Station

Just wanted to point out that NYC is currently at 83°F at 10:30pm while LaGuardia is 84F and JFK in the 70s. Should we still say NYC station is no good or is that just for day time?

Really? How come? Manhattan is an urban heat island. During winter, Manhattan is actually warmer than the burbs.

We haven't gotten particularly close this year. Warmest was only 96 F iirc.

There were numerous instances this summer where Central Park lagged behind every other station in the region, some by several degrees.

There were also several instances where LGA was warmer than all of the other stations by a suspicious margin. I think that's the station which really needs to be checked.
