Nice swing, but not as impressive as Melbourne's 40C to 18C.

Yes, I just heard. But I am not surprised since we are seemingly getting hotter every year.

The Sydney Metropolitan area now at 6pm:

This particular heatwave was indeed a rather South-Western NSW eventhence more adequate heat down this way than up north in the Central Tablelands at similar altitudes.

Hottest to Coolest; Snowy Monaro Shire:

Cooma Visitors Centre (778 m AMSL) = 39.5 C;

Cooma AP (930 m AMSL) = 37.9 C;

Anglers Reach (Here; 1,280 m AMSL) = 34.7 C;

Thredbo Village (1,380 m AMSL) = 33.0 C;

Cabramurra (1,482 m AMSL) = 32.3 C;

Perisher (1,738 m AMSL) = 30.1 C;

Thredbo Top Station (1,957 m AMSL) = 27.2 C

After this tweet, Birdsville peaked at 46.3C again today to make it 8 in a row. If the forecast holds there could be another week of +45C yet to come.

The wet season has been a bust in the Northern Territory so far but things might be about to change. Both GFS and the Euro are calling for a cyclone to develop in the Timor Sea within a week.

What's really interesting though is that both models are also calling for a cyclone to develop in the Torres Strait at about the same time.

The Euro brings this second one down the east coast of Queensland as one of two Australia Day cyclones.

The GFS meanwhile sends this system over the Gulf of Carpentaria and then over the NT linked by the monsoon trough to the other system. This scenario could create very heavy falls over much of the Top End.

Of course it could all fizzle out too.

A tropical low has formed in the Timor Sea as predicted. It is expected to move southwest. The Euro has now come into agreement and predicts the Torres Strait system to develop into a cyclone that moves into the Gulf with landfall Australia Day. This could end the Big Dry for NT and tropical Queensland.
