I prefer Montauk, since it is wetter and sunnier (although Budapest's sunshine is very acceptable, but too uneven so winters are too gloomy), and has milder record temperatures! I also prefer its lag pattern.
Also, which is more/less continental in your view? I think Montauk is less continental for having milder extremes and a more "marine" lag pattern.
They're both very good moderate continental climates.
I'd probably choose Budapest because it warms up faster in the spring time and is overall drier / less humid. Montauk looks like it has quite a bit of rain and I feel like the atmosphere might be a bit too saturated with water due to the ocean being so close.
Montauk probably has better sunshine but Budapest is almost as sunny as here so I think I'd be ok with that.
Also the Budapest data is 71-00, it is probably a little warmer now.
Montauk for being at a lower latitude with more sunshine.
I’m a bit surprised as Budapest is a bit milder, and being in europe, probably
doesn’t get those sharp cold polar vortex BS we have to deal with in eastern NA.
Here is a comparison and I’ll throw in my climate, which can easily match or beat
both during the warmer half of the year but is a bit colder the rest of the year.
As for average annual sunshine hours....Budapest has just under 2000..
Montauk...I’m guessing 2300 (remember US sunshine stats are slightly inflated),
for Burlington, Ontario....about 2100, maybe 2150.
Budapest has the strongest, quick spring warm up (typical of most of europe),
while both Montauk and Burlington have to. suffer through eastern NA seasonal lag.
Speaking of seasonal lag....Montauk blows Budapest out of the water in autumn..
nice, warmer transition to winter.

Budapest can also get strong cold snaps in winter as it is inland and is open to cold Siberian air blowing in from the east. Its record low is -25C. While Budapest has better springs, Montauk has better falls so that cancels out. Summer and winter are a wash in both climates.
The truth is the climates aren't that different and as such the higher sunshine and sun angle pushes Montauk over the edge for me.
Budapest since it warmed up a lot more than Montauk, and their summers and springs are easily better in recent years.
Montauk really hasn't changed much at all.
I'm always amazed how some places in the Northeastern US get such mild novembers compared to the month of March... March is still really wintry there, but November is basically milder than here, whereas March looks like a mild January here.
I prefer the European way, November is dark and has short days, I really don't like the winters dragging on for so long over there.
Another battle of two flawed but still decent climates.
Montauk: 80.2% / B-
Budapest: 74.5% / C
Budapest edges out Montauk in everything but precipitation. If Budapest had Montauk's precipitation, it would be an 84.5% / B, but... its aridity cost it a full letter grade.
By the way, the best a climate right at the Dfb/Dfa/Cfb/Cfa border could do is 90.0% / A-. My climate scorer is divided into seven sections: mean coldest month temperature (weighted 20%, ideal 23 F / -5 C), mean warmest month temperature (weighted 16%, ideal 81 F / 27 C), seasonal range (weighted 12%, ideal 58 F / 32 C), precipitation (weighted 25%, ideal 50" yearly), and seasonal lag, snowfall, and record range each weighted at 9% each (ideals: April at least 50% of the way in temperature from coldest month to warmest month, 50" yearly snowfall, at least 150 F / 83 C all time record range). A climate at the Dfb/Dfa/Cfb/Cfa line would have an 85% / B for the winter score, 73% / C for the summer score, 78% / C for the seasonal range and nothing would prevent 100% for all the other scores.
