I would be fine with lows in the 40s in summer. I just visited the Mount Shasta, CA area and they had a 91/49 day on the 23rd. Average highs in the 80s/90s with lows in the 40s is not uncommon across the western US.
I camped once in eastern Oregon with that sort of weather and didn't like it. It was too cold at night, and with the sun it was too hot during the day.
Lows in the 40s to me, is a sure fire signifier (try saying that 5x fast) that fall has arrived. I'd like to see the first lows in the 40s between September 7-12th. But not on typical nights til around September 25th. We don't average a low in the 40s til September 22nd but we certainly can expect it sooner. Have yet to see it happen in summer, though. (Latest 40s I've seen are in May)
I'd like to see my first 40s in August. Don't need it in July. 50s is fine. 40s would be preferred in August but unfortunately I typically have to wait until mid September here for the 1st.
The entire year has avg lows below 40 in my ideal climate. More specifically, the warmest avg low would be about 35F in mid July, so some of the warmer summer nights could be in the 40s or even 50s (but that's the exception not the rule).
Can't happen soon enough for me! I hate the heat. Up here in northern Maine we can get temps in the 40s any month in the year, but we don't always. I do like that it cools down rapidly at nightfall in the summer. Right now we are having nights in the 40s, but that won't last. I love it when daytime temps are in the 40s, but I'll have to wait till October for that.
