Summer is much easier to define, as once it gets to 59'F (15 'C), it's undisputably summer, though I wish the summer temps didn't get above that...
Wow. It must be really cold where you live. I wonder where and am guessing you live close to the tree line.

summer is when it is too hot to wear long pants and that shorts are needed, typically, highs in the 80s / 90s. That means early june to about mid september here.


Winter is when a coat / insulated jacket is needed and that a lighter (say, cotton, denim or windbreaker) jacket is not enough to stay outside. Highs in the 40s at most. Which means late November to early March.


Of course these are my personal ways to feel the temperatures. I'm probably more cold-immune than many italians, judging by their clothing, but someone from a cold winter climate would probably feel like our winter is wimpy.
