Default what exactly does a "trace" of snow mean?

i've seen in many weather records that a "trace" of snow fell in Miami in January 1977, what does a trace mean, a dusting or something like that?

It hit the ground and melted. The air was just cold enough to allow for the formation of snow, but it doesn't collect on the ground. That's my understanding of it.

I was in Florida in '89 when it snowed in Daytona. We had a trace of snow then. LOL

It doesn't have to melt to be called a trace. As far as I know it is basically a dusting, if that. More like a dusting on top of your roof.

If you can trace your name in the snow without getting your finger nail wet, that is a trace of snow.
If you write your name in the snow with the pen that has the yellow ink and your, uh, pen gets wets, then it's a tad more than a trace.

I think that's called a dusting of snow.

The honest answer is either way...it's very little snow with little or no impact.

Almost correct...

Snow is measured in 0.1 inch (tenths)...so a trace is anything that fell but accumulated to less than 0.1 inches.

rain is measured in 0.01 (hundredths).

No worries...as a career meteorologist I fully admit its confusing to have so many different measuring bench marks. That must have been a pretty exciting day in Miami with snowflakes in the air!!

Yeah in South Texas, you become an expert in forecasting permanent ridges... the current omega block isnt helping

This past winter, I don't remember thicknesses dipping below 540 more than once or twice here.
