When Toronto is overcast, it usually is thick from starting 8-11 am, lasting until 1-3 hours after sunset before going back to patchy cloud, or partly cloudy skies.
It's strange that about of the days that are near total overcast,
I can see at least half the night sky at 10 pm.
Melbourne is not like that, or are you upset when the sky is not totally clear?
Toronto probably gets less than 100 days a year where the skies could be totally clear at night, and probably less than 80 where the skies are totally clear in the day.

I'm an amatuer astronomer, and I do get Moderator cut: word replaced upset when its clouidy.
Melbourne apparently averages less than 60 clear day a year, the rest being smoke, dust (in summer) nd cloud (in winter), but for every clear day there seems to be 2 clear nights. I noticed that cloud during the night is much less common than during the day.
We actually get a huge amount of smoke in summer, due to bushfires and the like. We may get up to 2 weeks worth of smoke haze in summer, some ofwhich may be as thick as fog

Awesome as mate! I would of loved to see one!
Cloudy and stormy looking all day today as the low spun NW of Victoria. Some light rainfall about the place, but nothing with good falls. A few storms sparking off now near the low, and that should maybe move toward Melbourne overnight, and also another rain band approaching Melbourne and SW Victoria - though not sure if it will get over the ranges.!

Strong fronts on the way
The NW upper low moved across the state last night with a few showers and patchy rainfall abou the place. We got 1.6mm of rain.
I was suprised this morning when it was sunshine! Although now coming into nightime the cloud has developed again ahead of the next cold front, due to cross VIctoria early tomorrow morning with scattered showers. I think up to 5mm expected, mainly over the western and central districts...
A stronger front later Thursday - winds up to 45 knots...
