Well Denver is supposed to be the lightning capital of the world but honestly it is also about sunny 300 days a year. The worst place I ever been weatherwise was Kansas City, where I got chased by rain, hail, lightning, tornados all in a matter of minutes.
Anywhere in Oklahoma or Kansas in the summer months, but do you really want baseball size hail, 70mph+ winds, I know I'd love to experience that, cloud to ground lightning can be very dangerous as this video show, its simply amazing.
Oklahoma, Texas or Kansas are your best bets for wicked thunderstorms. Theyre powerful, intense, and in a strange way, very magical. Have fun and be safe!
We get some pretty cool storms here during monsoon season but nothing compares to the the storms I have seen in Texas. They are like nothing else I have ever seen.
One time I was in Denver and it was in the 80's and a storm blew in with about as high winds as I have ever seen. The temp dropped like a rock. It snowed later on that evening.
Pretty much anywhere in Florida you are guaranteed to see a thunderstorm in the summertime, esp. central Florida. Central Florida receives more lightning than anywhere else in the country. Summers in Florida have been kind of sporadic lately but I remember being a kid there and it storming every single day in the summer. The thunderstorms were so predictable that you could set your watch according to when they came.
Oh, I love the thunderstorms in Fla. It just gets super hot and humid and then it pours for about 15 minutes. Then the sun pops out again.
My vote also goes for the midsection of the country, but I'd include Neb. in that, too. They get some fierce thunderstorms and hail and tornadoes south of me. I learned that the storms we had last night came out of Texas. I think a few people on this forum had something to do with that.
