Yeah it's interesting. I'm certainly glad it would never happen!
I might have come across as a little rude in my original post. I know you were just highlighting the cold months.
We'd never realistically get extreme months one after another for half the year, but extreme weather patterns can persist on and off for long periods of time. November 85, February 86, April 86 and August 86 were all the coldest in living memory, and in 2006-07 we had the warmest July, warmest September, second-warmest Nov-Dec combination, fifth-warmest January and warmest April, not just in 40 years of local records but 350 years of national records.
Even though much lower temperatures are forecasted for late next week, January as a whole currently looks like this:
I don't think I've seen that kind of departure from the norm on a monthly forecast before. Three months with more than 4°C warmer than average temps in a row if this is true.
Week 1
Unsettled weather is expected through the week with all areas seeing further rain, but also some drier and brighter spells. Early in the period bands of heavy rain are expected to push east across the UK bringing the risk of further flooding. It's also likely to become very windy again at times with gales affecting much of the UK. The second half of the week is expected to see more unsettled weather but perhaps with longer dry interludes and less heavy rainfall. Temperatures often close to or slightly above average in the south and close to average in the north. The north could become colder later on with an increasing risk of sleet or snow over higher ground.
Week 2
Possibly more settled at times through the week in the south although some rain is still likely. In the north probably more changeable with outbreaks of rain and with close to average temperatures some sleet or snow is likely over higher ground. Confidence is low, but there is a chance of it turning colder later on in the period with an increasing risk of overnight frosts, and possibly a mix of rain, sleet and snow in the north. Confidence moderate.
