Your August is cooler than July by nearly 2,C and mid September looks like it could be 5C colder than July. I would have thought that would make it feel as though summer was over earlier.
I live in a similar climate and do consider summer to be at an end by mid to late August. It may still be warm but sunlight has changed: it's low, weak and yellow. Days are visibly shorter, nights are dark. Clouds and rain are moving in for good. Nature looks tired and first yellow leaves are appearing.
The high, vibrant sunshine, white nights and verdant nature in June are much more summery even if it's cooler. That's also why I think astronomical seasons and people quoting them as official starts to climatic seasons are ridiculous. Claiming September 20 is summer while June 20 is not with a straight face is enough for me to label anyone ignorant. Climatic summer or daily average temperature above 13°C lasts from mid-June until the end of August here. That nicely coincides with the summery feel.
Yes, but August is 1.5C warmer than June, which I consider as summer. But of course it depends a lot on the weather as well. Like right now.
Of course September is officially autumn, but the first half has more summerlike conditions than autumnlike. I more associate autumn with like 10-12C highs, rain and fall leaves.
Fair enough. I guess I'm just looking at it from my perspective, where February is slightly warmer than January.
Plus I get your point about the first part of September feeling more like summer, than the rest of Autumn. The same is true of March here ,which feels more like the summer months, than the April/June period.

I guess the decline in daylight hours would be even more noticeable in your latitude. Sun angle does play a big part in the summer feeling as well. I was on the Gold Coast in late May, and even though it was as warm/warmer than here in mid summer, it didn't feel like summer, just a very warm autumn.
While I completely agree with Hiromant about the sun angle and brighter nights, I think darkening nights are as well part of summer. It's late summer, a preparation for autumn.
Many continental locations in Europe have a clearly warmer July than August, but on the other hand August is still the second warmest month of the year.
This August has been a lot worse than 2006, in Buxton at least. July wasn't even half as good as 2006 either. This summer was mediocre. Last summer was pretty good. It reminded me a bit of 2003 except with a colder June and wetter July.

Yeah, and July 2006 was far better than this one. I was just saying that it's similar in that July was above average, August was pathetic, and September is looking to be warmer than August.
London had a warmer August 2006 than Paris! Not looking likely this year.
In 2003, it was good from June-September (the 2nd half of August was questionable, and October was bad).
