Don't listen to what SAB has to say about New Zealand weather, his previous statement calling NZ an icebox all year round shows just how much knowledge he has about New Zealand weather.

New Zealand weather is very mild. The mountains get lots of snow, but the cities are relatively warm during the winter. The summer's are cool.

The Central Otago area and Canterbury often get hot temperatures in Summer, 32C+. But to call it an icebox is just plain stupid.
When people look at New Zealand's weather alot of them just notice the main centres (Auckland,Wgtn, Chch,) in which are none of them have what you would call hot summers. Outside the main centres thats where the heat is.

I actually don't think this is true. I can't find any cities in new zealand that post hot summer highs. Even queenstown in otago has a january high of only 73F, very cool compared to most cities in the US. Perhaps you could find a hot New Zealand city. I can't.

Its true, trust me. Alexandra, where abouts are you getting your averages from? The wikipeida averages are out of date.
Remember they are only average highs, you do get temps high than that.
Alot of Central Otago places from Jan-Mar post highs of over 30C, somehow the averages don't justify the climate, like Melbourne, you look at their averages , Jan is their hottest month with an ave of 25.9C, they don't always get a high temp of 25.9C, they usually get warmer temps than that, days of over 40C+, that is the same case with Central Otago obviously not with the days of 40C+ but temps of between 29C-35C.

Averages don't really go out of date. Unless there's an unbelievably large shift in climate (of a size unheard of in modern history), averages remain accurate over time. You're correct that average temps often can't encompass the whole of the climate, but they do teach a valuable lesson. If the average is 73, for every day that's 90, there's another day that's 57. Or two days at 65. Lots of places experience some hot weather. But in New Zealand, the summers are cool for the most part everywhere.

Even NIWA, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric conditions have said they are out of date, trust me, I've been living here for more than 18 years and there are hot summers most notiably Central Otago and Canterbury, places like Hawkes Bay, Manawtu, Waikato are above average but the mainly rest part of the country have mild summers, not cool. Not overerly hot temps but not cold either.
(Excuse the spelling)

Philly is always cold. Especially today when it was 88 and you are drenched in sweat after walking across the street. Luckily I brought a jacket.
