(CNN) -- Much of the country was in extremis Friday, with temperatures dropping to record lows in parts from Minnesota to Vermont.
For those braving the deep freeze, the numbers ceased to have meaning.
"After it's 10 below, what difference does it make?" asked Wendy Schlueter of Babbitt, Minnesota, where the temperature hit 48 degrees below zero Friday
As someone who spent a lifetime working on a farm I could definitely tell the difference everytime the thermometer dropped 10 degrees.
My thermometer was half way between the house and barn, and every early morning heading to the barn-------I could detect if it was 10 degrees warmer or 10 dehrees colder.
The difference is in the "stng" to your face and the difference in the sound of the "crunch" of the packed snow under your boots.
Evidently Wendy Sclueter hasn't spent enough time outdoors or she wouldn't make such a stupid comment.
Inside a 70 degree house, yes, there is no difference between -10 and -40.
Well, make that three people who disagree with her. I've also spent a lot of time outside and I can tell the difference between 10 below and 20 below. Better yet I can tell the difference between a 30 below windchill and a 40 below windchill.
Wendy's all wet OR she lives her life in her house.
I'm with you, too! There's a big difference, cold is not just cold. Varying wind chills feel drastically different, plus the human element, everyone reacts different and -10 is not -40, not by a long shot.
