Albany is hell when it comes to climate, and is even colder than Melbourne.
Anwhere west of Esperance on the WA coast is crap and is off limits to anyone interested in sun and warmth. Esperance itself is nothing to get excited about either, with a climate very similar to Melbourne, despite its evocative name.

It could be better. I don't mind the cold during the winter, but some more sunshine would be nice. I would also like a quick transition from winter to summer weather. Chicago area is currently in the lower 50% for sunshine per year. It would be nice to be in the mid to upper 60% range.

I spent a whole summer in Esperance, back in 1996, admittedly I was on a rural property about 50ks from the coast.
The climate as you said is nothing to get excited about, hot spells are interspersed with strong southerly fronts from the Southern Ocean, a very cold body of water.
There are even cold water seals off the archipelego islands near Esperance.
That is why these places have a cool temperate, or maritime climate.
The west coast is good all the way down to Geographe Bay, which includes Busselton and Dunsborough, and even down to Margaret River.
Bunbury, 200ks south, is almost as warm as Perth.
This is due to a warm current, known as the Leeuwin current that traverses down the west coast.
Augusta is the point where the Indian Ocean meets the Souther Ocean, there is even a lighthouse there that I have been up.
Once you go east of here, you are facing the Southern Ocean, and the climate degenerates rapidly to cool windy and maritime, all the way to the Great Australian Bite.
The difference is due to the monumental difference in ocean temperatures between the Indian and Southern Oceans.
Probably the only creatures that like this are the Great White Sharks.

I'm "almost" there, we had our first 90 degree day now we're having our first thunderstorm (minus that thundersnow in the Winter).
Overall I don't like this climate, I despise Fall & Winter.

But the catch 22 is that colder climates have much fewer storms than hot climates....although I guess that is irrelevent as your such a heat lover in disguise
