Default Tornado rips through Kaitaia,NZ

A tornado has ripped through the Far North town of Kaitaia, causing widespread damage.

ONE News understands 14 homes in the town have been seriously damaged, with roofing tiles ripped off.

All the affected homes are in Pukepoto Road which has been cordoned off.

A number of trees have also been brought down.

Police say Kaitaia Hospital has also been seriously damaged with the boiler roof blown off, and a series of power outages.

Emergency crews from Kerikeri, Wanganui, Paihia and Whangarei are helping mop up.

Will be interesting to see how it pans out as the thunderstorms move onshore.

OH my!!! I'm sorry to hear that, Matty!!! Isn't it strange to have severe thunderstorms there this time of year? Wouldn't it be like our January there?

Strangly enough its not really that uncommon, was around two years ago in the middle of winter we had a series of s-thunderstorms with tornado which ripped through centrals areas up North, and again last year had one in winter which resulted in 7 deaths.

How helpless and terrified those people in the hospital must have been. Amazing there were no injuries.
