I have little doubt that after the general cooling trend the last three years have seen in UK weather, and the fist properly cold December/January/early February for a good while in 2008/2009, this could indeed be a cold winter. Shame, because my house is made of non-cavity stone walls with no insulation 1,000ft above sea level.

Everybody's predicting a snowier and colder winter, Accuweather and the Farmers Almanac and the NOAA. I'll go along with that. Sunspot activity continues to be low and that's a big influencing factor.

Here are NOAA's prediction maps for the winter. Looks like it will be warmer than usual in upper Midwest and colder than usual in the deep South.

Awww, thanks you for thinking of me and my hatred for the cold and snow, Candle and Mr. Marbles.
My vote is "NO." I'm really not sure about the Northeast and that's what this thread is about, but I don't believe the winter will be harsh. Here's why~ A few years ago, we had a quite chilly summer and I thought our winter would be horrible. It ended up being one of the nicest winters we've ever had. I just hope that history repeats itself and none of us have to suffer through a long and cold winter.

Yeah, we are due for a cold one. it's been awhile and things seem to add up for one. Usually a record breaking hot summer is either preceded or followed by a cold winter, so since last winter was a bust... |

I went with NO!  The last 2 years we've had more snow than normal in the midwest (at least where I am NE Wisc.)!
Last December, early in the month we had unseasonably cold temps so I just think we are ready for what would be a "normal" winter!
My reasoning, I've only been here 2 yrs. and I would like to know what a normal winter looks like! |

The upper midwest is getting off to a chilly start.
You know that's why Chicago was turned down for the 2016 Summer Olympics, the cool summer. They would have had to called it the "Without a Summer Olympics".
