Record COLD in the North and record HOT in the South
Why would that be???
The north is getting record snow and cold while we are in a record heat index of 104 degrees in Orlando, FL. I'm sure there is someone in this forum who knows how/why this is occurring.

Here in NYC our heat index was around 80 the other day, we may not see any snowfall in this decade lol.

The northern U.S. Plains and Canadian Prairies are experiencing record-cold.
*Anywhere east of the Rockies, west of the Great Lakes and maybe north of Kansas or Oklahoma.

My area and a huge portion around me has been WELL below avg. I just posted this in another thread, but there have been record breaking lows. Pierre is about 100 miles from here (give or take a few miles) and they came in at 15 this morning which broke their old record low of 19 in 1987.
This isn't isolated, but just as an example~yesterday my high was 39 and my average is 66. I keep an eye on Tulsa and they were about 16 deg. below avg. so it's extended that far south for sure. Houston's temps have been nice, but they've also been well below average.
This morning TWC said that many areas of the country can prepare for temps 45 deg. below their average. Now that's HUGE!!!
But to answer your question~it's my understanding that it's that dreaded Arctic blast that descends on us and freezes us out. I did hear that the southeastern part of the country, as far south as Ga., will have a cold front moving through.
Sorry, but I don't have the answer as to why Fla. has been so hot. I noticed that the past few days, too. Yesterday mid-morning the Tampa area was at 84 and the heat index was already 95. Have they given you any reason for it on your local tv stations?

Right now it is 90+ degrees with a heat index of 102°. Several more days of this yet to come. Promised cold front never came.

We've been even more below average here. On Friday we had a high of 50, the average is 76. That broke a record "cold, high" for the day, set exactly 100 years ago The furnace is on, it's October 11th Some locations in our panhandle have been below freezing for 29 hours now. They were in the 20's all day yesterday, 45-50 degrees below average, yikes!

It has been right around average in New England over the past few days. This week looks to turn colder with highs 10-15F below average.
