Surprised after opening curtains to see fog! Makes me feel like I'm back in San Francisco . I think it's the first time I've seen fog here in a August month.

Happy to have had the perfect end to winter. 250 hours plus of sunshine, and lovely warm days all of August. Early spring always seem like a step back from late winter. Temperatures may be warmer, but the sea breeze means there is usually a unpleasant windchill mid afternoon.

250+ hrs in Aug? That must be near the monthly record?

I don't know what the August record is, but this would have to be close. It makes up for the meagre 120 hours in June this year.

Wowie. I thought you meant 250 hours for all three summer months combined.

Here we couldn't possibly even get 250 hrs in a summer month let alone a winter month.

If we only had 250 hours over the whole winter I wouldn't live here. It would be off to the Bay of Plenty (North Island), Byron Bay, or anywhere on the NSW coast come to that. Only 120 hours in June this year felt grim, and had some people talking about the Gold/Sunshine coast.

Buxton wouldn't make the cut either, although I would really like to visit it one day. At least you have the option of a serious improvement in climate not too far away.

I think we had 27 hours of sunshine last December here. We've had several winter months in years gone by with below 20hrs of sun (14 hrs in Jan 2004 I think) and even less than 10hrs in some of the 1980's winter months. Of course, I didn't live here then.

That is seriously low. If I lived there, I would have no option but to head to France, Switzerland, etc on a regular basis, for some skiing and sun.

Sadly these past few winters have been rather dismal in the continent too
Well, we had one of our sunniest Decembers on record last year, but since our days are short the sunshine totals won't be impressive.

You sure about that? NZ all-time record so far is only about 234 hours. Mind you, I saw Blenheim had 217 up to 27th despite southerly incursion with the snowstorm earlier.
