I left the UK permanently in mid August 2008. I remember it being a bleak summer up until that point (and I recall August month end stats were not that impressive).

Conversely I was working in Brighton in the summer of 2006 and I remember it being comparable to a Sydney summer (probably not in terms of the temperatures, but plenty of sunshine plus you had the long evenings).

How has the summer of 2010 compared to 2008? In terms of temperature, sunshine and rainfall?

August 2008 was the dullest August in recorded history (London recorded just 108 hours of sunshine, less than February that year which recorded 115). Not sure about Brighton, but London in July 2006 was definitely warmer than an average summer in Sydney.

In London so far this summer:

June
Avg max: 23.5C
Avg min: 12.1C
Precip: 12.4 mm
Sun: 220.1 hrs
Temps about 1.5C above normal, below average precip and slightly above average sunshine.

July
Avg max: 25.1C
Avg min: 15.2C
Precip: 14.8 mm
Sun: 144.3 hrs
Temps 1.2C above normal, slightly below average precip and well below average sunshine.

But I do remember seeing monthly sun totals in the Toronto Star newspaper towards the last few days of a month (25th? 27th?)
and seeing 37 hrs of sun. And it wasn't noticeably sunny after that.
We need a good reason to be sunny here; I've seen full overcast at 103.something kPa!
Not to worry. Would have been nice getting some actual Toronto, Can. sun readings for statistical purposes.

Do you believe me though that our lowest monthly sunshine hour totals are lower than anywhere in Australia and most of NZ? Seems logical imho.

You winter days are shorter, so that wouldn't be surprising. NZ lowest go down to about 35 hours. Bet you haven't ever had a summer month with 13% or so of possible (60 out of about 450).

From what I've read, Toronto comes nowhere close-by in Australia's case. Whilst Melbourne has the lowest, on average, annual total out of all mainland state capitals, it still outstrips Toronto by a wide margin (around 200 - 250 hours or so). However Toronto has more sunnier summers than here.
