That's quite right, for example here in Mildura we've had nearly 150mm of rain this month (about 7 times the average) but still pushing 11 hours of sunshine per day.

Depends on the type of rainfall, if it's heavy convective showers and storms (like here in summer) that drop large amounts in a short time then you can have high sunshine with high rainfall.

Well, the snow and ice has disrupted my plans for today, which is a nuisance, but as things thaw out mid-week I'll be able to reschedule my activities, here's hoping!

You're relatively lucky - most of the country has had a much cloudier than average month, contrasting with the warmth.

It happens to be a feature of the NZ climate that in the South Island, seasonal variations in % sunshine are small (and in fact in some parts in the historical record December has least, though this has been slowly changing). In the North Island summer is sunnier than winter, but the range is not great.

Tolerating the very low light levels in most of Europe, Canada and much of Europe in winter would be hell to me.
Yeah low light levels in winter here cause a lot of people here to have SAD. I'm not sure if you have this phenomenon in NZ to the same degree that we have here, but my guess is probably not.
2155 sunshine hours is not bad. You're right it definitely beats here. Here we seem to have a much higher summer maximum in sunshine compared to winter as far as percentage of sunshine hours goes. I guess Ch'ch's % of sunshine hours are more evenly distributed throughout the year compared to here.
I know that if I endured many consecutive dull summer days, I'd be cranky as summers here are generally much sunnier than winters.

10 mm of rain here so far today with more on the way. We'll still finish the month with far below average though.

"Many" consecutive dull summer days are not experienced all that often, and rarely in the sunnier parts of the country.

Ch'ch's average % values only vary about 6.5% for the 25-year average, even less for longer periods. In parts of South Canterbury there is a reversal with winter being up to 10% sunnier in the most extreme case. For much of the South Island the range is 6% or less.

Unhappy that strong winds yesterday morning trashed the garden and that the river won't be swimmable for a few days, it's running at 40X it's average flow for this time of year.

The last 2 weeks or so have been the cloudiest for a while, but the rain and warmth are a good trade-off.

We're due for a quick warm up, high 30's maybe 40's, rain, sleet, fog, lots of melting for 2 days then temps dropping dramatically.

Should be quite messy, and I'm just not a fan of sleet and fog!
