I am indifferent. I understand the symbolism and understand that some people like it a lot. I don't agree with the phallic imagery--what, are we implying the fathers are crossing swords? Sometimes a candle is just a candle.

Ours was white and the best man and maid of honor helped light it, meaning they lit the tapers with a lit candle from the alter and handed the tapers to us to light the unity candle. At least that's how I recall it, but I could be mistaken.

That is how I've always seen them. Its white candles that are lit from the alter. Sometimes the Best Man and Maid Of Honor light the candles, sometimes the Bride & Groom.
I don't think I've ever looked at a burning candle, and thought "Oh, phallic objects!" I'm even looking at the tapered candles on my dresser and thinking, "nope not a..." Can I say that word on CD?

Huh? Go ahead and get married and light a unity candle? Yeah, still wouldn't see it as a phallic object. But I guess that is because I'm not a 12 year old boy. I'm an adult who sees a candle as a candle and doesn't think PHALLIC OBJECT (!!!) every time I see something log shaped.

Seriously.
Seeing a pasty white, thin taper as phallic???
Says something, doesn't it?
