I also would not live in Lake Worth, and Royal Palm Beach is just ok. My choice would definitely be Wellington, great schools, lots of kids and families, very safe and wonderful town with lots of restaurants, shopping, and a great community center with every imaginable sport as well as it's own town pool. I loved living in that town! With todays downturn in prices, you could probably get something under $300K I think.

Wow - there has been such negativity about Lake Worth. I feel as though the people commenting on it have not really explored the city. I live East of Federal in the Northern section and have never had any problems with break-ins or any crime! My Sister and her husband just had a baby and live down the street from me, also East of Federal. There are multi-million dollar homes around the corner on the intracoastal, however you can still buy something for in the low-200k's on my street a mile from the beach (or less)! It is still affordable and there are homeowners here that do take pride in their vintage cottages that have a lot of character compared to the new construction out West.

That said, there are not-so-great areas in any city in the U.S.!

Actually, Lake Worth is the opposite of most U.S. cities. Most of the city is bad while there are a few good areas.

I remember how Lake Worth was back in the seventies before I95 was completed. The area east of 95 was mainly retirees with some young families. When I flew with my family down to visit my grandmother, I remember a very clean and friendly area.
When I inherited her house in 1991, I was appalled at what the city of Lake Worth had become. I soon sold that house and bought one in Western Lake Worth. Due to illness in the family, we moved to Tennessee where we live now.
We returned a couple years ago to visit a friend in Greenacres. While we were there, we heard what sounded like gunshots. The next day the news informed us there had been a double murder which was drug related about 2 blocks from where we were.
I agree with everybody who is recommending the Jupiter area. It is a good idea to learn a little Spanish. The coffee in those quaint Cuban restaurants is excellent!
