Its a catch 22..in our situation we left NY in 1991 for Denver, we were married in 89 and left all my family and friends for a job oppty, Our son was born in Colorado in 95 and 8 months later we moved back to NY for because we missed the family terribly and our son is the 1st grandchild in the family...Stayed there a few years and bought our 1st house in NJ in 1999 after I had my 2nd child. lived in NJ for 10 years until we decided with the cost of living and for other reasons we decided to move to Charlotte in 2007..No family although my friend of 34 years at the time, moved to NC 2 months after we did..My dh lost his job there with one of the big banks and was offered a great position same money as up north in South Florida..I have family and friends in South Florida as well and my parents are snow birds...yes it was difficult without my sister and her family and my parents all being up north, but we did it for what we thought was a better quality of life...Charlotte would have been great if my kids were real little and we chose a different area but my youngest was already 8 then moved when she was in 4th grade to Boca...We have always wanted to live in Florida and for us it was our dream...the only advice I can give you is again if you decide make sure you have Alot of Savings put away, and a Job that has stability because if you have to go out and find one it will be very difficult, as for the wages I don't think you will make more than u are making now but it depends on what you do....My issues with South Florida is the Cost of living and a few other little things but if one can maintain their lifestyle its great We love Florida and it is lonely without family here all year round so I can really relate however its just a matter of your financial situation and the economy and uncertainty of this economy...

Good Luck!!

Not without a good paying job lined up....pay will be important, don't think you can make it on less with kids it's very difficult for average wage owners alone...

It's very nice here, but not cheap at all. And salaries are so much lower here.

This!
Salaries don't match up with housing costs.

You should have seen how bad it was in 2004, the home prices have gone down, but still not to the levels they were in the 1990s, at one time say 1996 or so you could buy a brand new home for $125,000, all CBS, Barrel Tile Roof in a nice development..even up to 2000 the prices were somewhat realistic..3/2/2 for $175,000..those days are gone..

Home prices are not bad. No complaint there. But fwiw, utilities.... are not reasonable. Health Insurance... not really..... and auto... No....... Plus food (grocery) seems a bit higher than other parts of the U.S.

Agreed! If you have cash, there are deals to be had. Rentals are expensive.

Americans move too fast, too far, too often.
Stay put and be thankful you have a good job that is relatively secure.
You can see your relatives during the holidays and vacations, which for most people is more than enough.

I did see it. I lived in Jupiter from 1983 through 2010. You forgot to mention by 2006/2007 those houses were $400,000+ before the crash. Honestly, the current prices are pretty good. Another thing to bring up is taxes. I pay a 6.4% state income tax. I also pay a hefty property tax on my vehicles, about $400 per vehicle per year. Not to mention an 8.65% sales tax...
