Flooding - did you hear which parts of Stuart, and the cause?

I've noticed there are plenty of gated communities, and you get more house for the money, but it is farther from the action; not as many good restaurants as in Palm Beach Gardens, Delray, Boca, etc. But it's still so busy, as Stuart's main road with all the stores and car dealerships is always packed with traffic whenever I've been there. I couldn't make up my mind about the "feel" of the place and whether or not it was for me. I think there is probably very little nightlife.

One plus is that I hear the doctors and hospital are good in Stuart (Martin Memorial), and good hospitals are not something south Florida is famous for. Some doctor friends of mine who moved to Boynton Beach and Delray have told me the hospitals in south Florida are weak compared to where they came from; they recommend going to Miami Hospital or the Cleveland Clinic in Weston for any serious care.

I think it's that the elevation is lower there than the surrounding areas that causes it?
I'd googled it and found it...

Good point about decent hospitals and that.
It's definitely something one should take into consideration.
I think we're both in the same boat.. looking for the same thing.. keep me posted in what you find?
Best of luck!

This come down to personal choice and what you want. There are beautiful communities in all these cities. PBG, Jupiter and Boca have and are near everything and I would recommend them highly. They are east and moving around the area is just much easier and quicker. Downtown at the Gardens, Cityplace, Atlantic Avenue, Mizner, the beaches and the malls including the new outlet mall going up on Palm Beach Lakes Blvd. are all east and in easy driving distance. We lived in Saint Lucie West for 6 years after 14 years in Broward County. Over time we found ourselves always driving south for things to do. More and better restaurants, better entertainment venues, the casinos, beaches and things like the airport and cruise terminals were always an hour or more away. After 6 years we moved back south to Palm Beach County and we have not looked back. It our personal choice.

Jim, I know what you mean by personal choice. Over time, I've run into people who have lived in south Florida - up as far north as PBG - who have said they got tired of the traffic, urbanization, and seasonality of it and wanted someplace quieter, more down to earth, and more "old Florida," so they moved farther north in Florida.

I've also heard of people doing exactly the opposite, such as you did; moving south in Florida to a faster lifestyle with more going on. I could probably be happy with either, so am trying to decide what areas I like best while vacationing there.

CFBS, I will keep you posted on what I end up doing. There are goods and bads to everyplace, it seems.

I have seen places on the internet in Boynton Beach and Lake Worth (Bellagio and Villaggio) but am not very familiar with that area. I'm also interested in Delray and the Palm Beach area. I would also consider a nice rental community.
_____________

You seem to cover a lot of territory and that can get quite confusing. It may be best for you to rent something 'off-season' for a couple of months and then select the area you like and go from there. This is what we did before we moved to Florida and believe me I am glad we did. In other words, I would not worry too much 'only' about children at this time and here is why.

If you look in a development which also offers 4-5 bedroom homes you will find families with children. But, if you look for a development with smaller townhouses or even condominiums you will most likely find the owners are either snowbirds or retirees ; very few children, if any. These communities however tend to be rather 'quiet' during the off-season (April-November) because the snowbirds leave in early April. In our development 64% owners are snowbirds.

I can make a few suggestions for the Jupiter area only. PGA National, for instance, has also few sections with nice 2-3 bedroom villas and there is always something going on. The area around the Garden Mall in Palm Beach Gardens is also very nice and very convenient to everything. The area east of US1 is great if you like to be closer to the beach but tends to be more expensive. My second choice would be Tequesta and/or Juno Beach.

Stuart is further to the airport and 'upscale' shopping should that be of concern to you. Any community 55+ is going to be less expensive but personally I would not go there.

If you like, search on Zillow in the Jupiter area by Zip Codes 33477; 33410; 33418; 33458; in Tequesta the Zip is 33469 to get a feel for neighborhoods and pricing in this area.

Thanks, Petunka, I will look at those zip codes. I have noticed that communities with mostly one-level homes get a lot of couples and retirees, while communities with mostly larger, 2 story homes tend to have a lot of families. A mix is fine, especially in a large community.
