Well maybe a job isn't a problem, maybe works from home....seems like their area droves of people coming on here and claiming they work from home...more like a Lifetime movie to me than reality.....
Actually I did state that I would be getting a job, and maybe looking at restaurant/food industry.. as I have no college education at this time.
Petunka -- yes I suppose I would have to work some nights/weekends, but all of this is the reason I posted on here in the first place, to get others input and advice. It's helpful to have someone play devil's advocate, I may have to consider starting to make serious plans in the next year before moving. But then again, I know people who made the move with almost nothing and they are doing quite fine. I am used to living paycheck to paycheck so really nothing would be that different.....
I am talking average people....sure I know people that made a mint from nothing, but they are few and far between. It will be difficult for those who have big expectations because jobs do not pay as much as they should here based on the COL.
You will not get $15/hr working retail... very hard to survive on a Wal mart income here.
So noted. Wish Wall Mart had more competition in some areas. The employees could use some PR training for sure. On the other hand the stock market has been kind to this company over the years. In Nordstrom, for instance, sales people work on commission for sure. I believe their income averages more than $15/hour but could be wrong. Not sure I am making the point.

Seriously THX?!!? Have you not heard of the software, high tech, consulting and e-commerce industries? Many of the jobs in these companies require travel with distributed global offices so work from home is a very real and viable option. Perhaps you are hearing about more people working from home since there is a possibility they work in one of these growing industries??
I happen to work in such a position at a Fortune 50 company and while it is certainly no Lifetime movie (involving 80 plus hour work weeks w travel every few weeks) I can say that I am very well compensated and yes actually making a living in SF. With 3 airports within an hour drive and lots of reasonably priced flights with the tourism, this is actually a very easy place to live for these kinds of jobs.
While I agree with most of your statements about the realities of living here (still finding it hard to deal with the beautiful homes next to the rundown ones and the drug problem, but there are a LOT of great things), I felt compelled to speak up on as I think you are a bit off base on this one.

Boohaa. Here I defend THX. Just in the event you have not noticed, we are not talking about Corporate America on this tread. Care to read what this conversation is about before you fire away?
I understood it as a general comment about a lot of people saying on these boards that they work from home, not specific to the type of work the original poster would possibly be doing. And sincere apologies if I misundersood and sounded snarky, just overracted when I saw this as a lot of people express skepticism when I tell them what I do - often get that look like "oh really...." as if I really have some kind of shady internet business, something that would make a good Lifetime movie
we pay about $3000 a year for a private school because public schools are overrun with immigrants
This made me laugh.
OK I mighta missed alot. You have no immigration problem then because of the guardian situation? Fine. What WILL your status be? Visa? Visitor visa..or are you a resident because she was your guardian. This matters for jobs. And does this mean your kids can "legally" (ok eyeroll..) attend school here?
If he's staying there and REALLY you are not breaking up etc. then you are saving 3000 a year on school. PLUS you say he may be able to send you money anyway.
If he (or your mom?) is trustworthy you could leave the kids there and come here and set things up. My cousin jumped ship and lived in a basement of a restaurant in the dark for TWO YEARS in the 70's so it could always be worse LOL. (Greek). You may only need a few months.
You can see if your people here know anyone RELIABLE you could room-mate with once you get here so you don't impose on the relatives for long maybe (ugh) people might want to rent out a portion of their home if they could use the money. No credit or deposit probably necessary.
Anyway, you can maybe save not having to pay deposit and two months security if you can get into a roommate situation not on the lease OR into a temp extended stay hotel. There was one on my corner in Jacksonville for ...I want to say 750 a month, furnished with everything included. NO deposit. NOTHING FANCY just a large suite. So what? It was new and clean and actually I saw moms with kids going there after picking them up from the bus.
Jobs I have no clue. You have to hustle like housecleaning etc. Hook up with other Bahamians...are they friendly that way? I ask because Greeks are that way. Even if you had NO education, I can't believe you can't get a job cleaning with all the tourist etc in Florida. I'd do that. There are even corporate jobs doing it for large high rises on staff and they only do common areas and move ins.
Where I lived in Jacksonville the private non employee resident hired cleaners were professional crews that came in and out in an hour tops ...for a 1800 sq foot condo and the resident paid about 100.00. But it was a crew of maybe 4. They were quick and spotless.
If you are a good talker (sounds like you are) and can sell stuff on the phone AT&T is ALWAYS hiring for the sales office, they can't keep people..you could try something like that. Pays a ton, bi!ch of a job, test can be a little challenging but once you get in you will make over 55 - 60K a year without sales compensation...that's extra. My top seller coworkers in PA hit 150K a couple times four years ago. NO COLLEGE necessary. Full benefits and I mean FULL.
There's an office in Ft Lauderdale on Federal at 65th. And they prefer younger people so that's in your favor. You apply online then go interview for a role play. Or Jacksonville, Miami or Pensacola
I don't know about the immigrant status thing, though and work history how that'll fly. You can apply online. There are several steps. Do not do it till you're here though. And you can contact me if you want. There's a trick, answer every question that YOU ARE THE BEST even if you don't believe it, not kidding or you'll get scored low on the personality portion. The math etc is not very hard but if you need to, brush up. Like "Would your friends say your are competitive, non competitive or average?" "COMPETITIVE!" Always answer that way regardless!!! haha.
Your visa is everything what is stopping you from popping over and checking things out for a week or two what am I missing? Like, from Israel you get told how long you are allowed to stay here even if you have a 10 year visa they don't let you always USE it and come and go whenever you please but you don't have that problem, correct?
And yes I agree with "be a nurse".
ETA: DO NOT give ANYONE a dime without meeting them and reviewing the whole deal in person including the living situation even if your relatives "recommend" something. Scammers are prolific. One got me for 2700.00 using his OWN LEGAL PROPERTY as a bait and switch type of deal and there was nothing anyone could do.

You are right. The comment seemed general, but I tried to tie it to this post, which in my view is going nowhere, unfortunately. And, believe, you did not sound snarky at all! I like your views.

Again you are not "average" nor are these types of positions plentiful here, sure they exist. I have had the opportunity to work remotely from here once in my career, but the company located in Raleigh, changed their mind at the last minute and requested I move to their office there, I turned down the offer which was quite lucrative.
So you work 80 hours a week??..... you do know that's 16 hours a day, basically 6AM to 10PM....every day.......sounds like a great job just hope your making over $300K or more a year. Also why are you giving your 2 cents in a Florida forum if your living in San Francisco? If your thinking of moving here, I hope your "remote job" has some sustainability and that you do not have to fly to China frequently because your adding hours to your flight time in the process. Personally I would not want to work from home, your not learning from others and in some jobs a lot of collaboration is necessary. Also it would be easy to get distracted and lose focus, that's just me.
In terms of working more hours....I have seen non-exempt, non white collared employees who make $25-$30/hr, work overtime and make more money than salaried white collared employees. Working salaried is not what it's cracked up to be and a lot of people get suckered into it thinking the initial salary is great until they realize that they have no work life balance and not getting paid for the extra 20/hrs a week. My neighbor who drives 100 miles a day round trip down to Sunrise....leaves at the crack of dawn and get's home when it's dark...drives a total of 2 hours plus a day, does not get paid for his time commuting, nor his gas and he is a salaried employee....do the math...that's reality for many here and elsewhere...

runswithscissors - maybe you did miss a part of where I said I was born in FL, have US citizenship, have a SSN.. So that will not be an issue. I don't need a visa. I do plan on coming over in about 3 weeks to talk to some realtors that I've been communicating with via email. and to also look at possible jobs.
A lot of the other stuff you said helped, so I will continue researching and when I come there for a visit I will look into every single thing that I need to. Right now MONEY is the only issue
Never thought about the temp. hotels for extended stay .... I'll see if there's one anywhere in the area.
