we currently live in Chicago where $900 can get you a small 1 bedroom apartment. my husband and I are considering moving to WPB, but we're not sure where to settle down because many warn about the high crime rates there. i was looking for something north of the PB airport near westgate. any suggestions are welcome

900 is a good budget for the Villages of West Palm Beach, which gets you north of the airport.

Westgate is probably not somewhere you want to be if you are concerned with crime.

Hey TriMT7 -
Are there ANY safe areas of West Palm? It has some really nice places there. I haven't spent much time there, but when I do... I prefer Dos Equis.. Oh wait, sorry, I meant West Palm Beach... j/k

Haha, yes. West Palm Beach has a definite bad area (50% of crime happens in one zip code - 33407). But West Palm Beach also has a multitude of multi million dollar homes and condos, as well as solid middle class neighborhoods.

It's really a city that developed like many of the older cities... a true downtown, organically developed neighborhoods, sidewalks, etc. It is NOT Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Boca, etc.

West Gate referenced by the poster above isn't even West Palm Beach, but an unincorporated area just outside city limits that is really run down. Just not a place I'd live.

The closer you are inland towards Wellington and Royal Palm Beach in West Palm the better.

Yuck.

No offense, but that area is soulless and bland. That's fine, if that's what you're into.

But IMO, the further EAST you are to Palm Beach and the water, the better.

WPB is currently one of the most undervalued real estate markets in the country.

With the huge revitalization downtown, the Palm Beach Outlets shopping, etc. it's poised for TREMENDOUS growth. This is the prime time to be buying something out there.

The overwhelming majority of the area has no issues with crime, people on CD are a bunch of drama queens. Chitown is 587 billion times more dangerous than ANY neighborhood in South Florida, period.

$900 goes VERY FAR there, you can definitely get outstanding housing in a very good area for that kind of money.

I agree with this statement. My sister lived in Wellington. Soulless is the perfect word. Thank goodness she moved and is now about 2 miles from the ocean. Soooo much better.
